WORLD POPULATION HITS 7 BILLION!


MANILA, Philippines — Sometime Sunday, a baby was born, and the world’s population reached seven billion. The birth came a day ahead of what the United Nations has proclaimed as The Day of 7 Billion.

It as much a milestone in human history as it is a worldwide cause for deep concern.

Think about it: Humankind didn’t hit the 1 billionth threshold until the 19th century. But barely a hundred years later, we were 2 billion strong. Our numbers have since been growing by giant, exponential leaps.

GLOBE TELECOM WELCOMES PLDT-DIGITEL MERGER!

MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom Inc., the country's second-largest telecommunications player, has welcomed the approval of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co.'s (PLDT) acquisition of Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc. (Digitel) on two conditions set by regulators.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) gave the deal a green light Wednesday, but ordered PLDT to divest itself of one of its third-generation (3G) frequencies in six months and continue offering unlimited services under Digitel brand, Sun Cellular.

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - After months of waiting, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co.'s (PLDT) acquisition of a majority stake in Digital Telecommunications Philippines (Digitel) has finally been completed.

PLDT and Gokongwei-led JG Summit on Wednesday announced the successful completion of PLDT's purchase of a 51.55% stake in Digitel from JG Summit in a "landmark" share-swap transaction valued at about P69.2 billion.

GMA Network’s ground-breaking epic series, "Amaya," continues to win the hearts of television audiences, which has translated to the program’s phenomenal ratings success on the weeknight primetime race.

According to full September households data (September 25 to 30 based on overnight ratings) from the more widely recognized ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement, "Amaya" dominated its timeslot in Total Urban Luzon and Mega Manila.

In viewer-rich Mega Manila, which makes up 58% of total television households nationwide, Amaya scored an average household share of 35.9% versus its ABS-CBN counterpart’s 27.3%. ABS-CBN DEFEATS GMA-7 IN METRO MANILA PRIME TIME FOR OCTOBER!

MANILA, Philippines—Lopez-led ABS-CBN Corp. stole the lead in Metro Manila television ratings from rival GMA Network Inc. in the first two weeks of October, the latest survey from research firm Kantar Media showed.

In a statement, ABS-CBN said, “More Filipinos get their nightly dose of entertainment fare and news from the country’s largest multimedia conglomerate, ABS-CBN Corp.”

The company said it obtained an average individual TV rating of 42.1 percent as against GMA’s 29 percent on primetime TV, when viewing levels peak and where advertisers make most of their ad placements.
Based on Kantar Media data for individual national TV ratings from October 1 to 19, ABS-CBN led all TV networks in Metro Manila during primetime with an average TV rating of 35.8 percent versus GMA’s 31.6 percent.

GMA-7 CLAIMS TO OVERTAKE ABS-CBN IN TOTAL AIRTIME REVENUE!

In an interview with Inquirer GMA Network big boss, Atty. Felipe Gozon claimed to have overtake ABS-CBN Corp. in total airtime revenues in (early) third quarter as strong ad loads in their daytime line-up continue to drive the over-all revenue growth. In a write-up by Paolo Montecillo, Atty. Gozon indicated that the company (GMA NETWORK) is now ahead of ABS-CBN in “air time” or advertising revenue, claiming that, for the first time in history, the network has cornered a larger share of the advertising market over rival ABS-CBN Corp. But load minutes for either networks, or the amount of time dedicated to TV commercials, “are just about even.”

Moammar Gadhafi, a deposed Libyan leader, has been killed, interim Libyan Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril told reporters in Tripoli on Thursday.

There are conflicting reports surrounding the circumstances of his killing, which reportedly happened in or near Gadhafi’s hometown of Sirte on Thursday. Libya’s ambassador to the United Kingdom says that Gadhafi’s body is in Misrata, Libya.

AFTER 14 YEARS, WESTLIFE TO SPLIT NEXT YEAR!

DUBLIN - Irish pop act Westlife will split up following a farewell tour next year in order to pursue new ventures, the band said on Wednesday, calling a halt to a 14-year career that has featured 14 British number one singles.

The boy band, put together by pop impresario Louis Walsh when its five original members were still in the their teens, sold over 44 million albums worldwide and saw seven of their 11 albums hit the top spot in Britain.

One of its members, Bryan McFadden, left in 2004 but the band continued on as a foursome, releasing six more albums. Westlife said on Wednesday their second greatest hits album, due out in November, would be their last.

GOOGLE SHUTS DOWN GOOGLE BUZZ!

Google Buzz, Google's failed first attempt at creating a social network, will finally be shut down in a few weeks along with a number of products, the search giant announced over the weekend.

But vice president for products Bradley Horowitz hinted some of the products to be shut down may be integrated into ongoing projects like Google+.

"Changing the world takes focus on the future, and honesty about the past. We learned a lot from products like Buzz, and are putting that learning to work every day in our vision for products like Google+. Our users expect great things from us; today’s announcements let us focus even more on giving them something truly awesome," Horowitz said in a blog post.

GMA NETWORK EXPECTS PROFIT DROP THIS YEAR DUE TO POOR SALES!

GMA Network Inc. on Wednesday said it is unlikely to meet its net income target this year because of the cut back on advertising expenditures of multinational companies.

“We may not be able to meet the P3-billion net income target this year,” Felipe Gozon, GMA chairman and chief executive told reporters on the sidelines of the 37th Philippine Business Conference.

Gozon blamed the anticipated drop in earnings on the reduction in advertising expenditure of firms such as Unilever, Procter and Gamble, Nestlé, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson.

The shampoo wars, soap wars, telecoms wars, and cough and cold wars continue, said Barrero, noting an overall 15-percent growth in spending for traditional media, with TV grabbing 77 percent of the total ad expenditures.

These wars are reflected in the expenditures per product category, with the top 10 for January to September 2011 as follows:

1. hair shampoos, rinses, treatment, hairdressing products, up 26 percent to P21.189 billion from P16.773 billion;

Television advertising went up by three percent from 74 percent to 77 percent compared to the same period last year and seemed to have eaten into radio advertising, which dropped by the same three percent from 21 percent last year to 18 percent this year.

Other media, like billboards, are also gaining more popularity among advertisers.

“Billboards advertising is still stable despite the ‘storms’ along the way,” said Eric Barrero, Nielsen client service director, referring both to weather disturbances that can turn billboards into a hazard, as well as the controversies involving sexy ads.

STAR CINEMA & VIVA FILMS HITS NEW ALL TIME RECORD FOR NO OTHER WOMAN!

As of yesterday, October 11, the adult drama No Other Woman has already grossed P210 million.

Star Advertising and Promotions director Roxy Liquigan told PEP.ph that the movie starring Anne Curtis, Derek Ramsay, and Cristine Reyes reached this amount in a span of 14 days.

Directed by Ruel Bayani, No Other Woman is written by Kriz Gazmen and Jay Fernando. It is co-produced by Star Cinema and Viva Films.

No Other Woman has been graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board, allowing it to receive a 100-percent exemption from amusement taxes. The film is rated R-13 by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board.

Based from TV monitoring, ABS-CBN remained to be the most loaded TV Station in Prime time in terms of total ad minutes!
