MANILA - The operator of TV5 will overhaul its programs and trim costs in a bid to cut losses in the near term, as its chairman admitted that it would "take longer" before the network turns in a profit.

Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman of ABC Development Corp, said losses in the second half of 2012 are likely to mimic the P2.8 billon hemorrhage in the January to June period.

PNOY'S SATISFACTION RATING FALLS BY 12 PERCENTAGE POINTS!

FILIPINOS CONTINUE to rate President Benigno S. C. Aquino III’s performance as "very good" but his net score has fallen from a personal record high hit earlier this year, the Social Weather Stations (SWS) said in a new report.

Mr. Aquino’s December net satisfaction rating of +55 (72% satisfied minus the 17% dissatisfied) was down 12 points from the +67 (77% satisfied, 10% dissatisfied) recorded in August, results of a Dec. 8-11 poll made exclusive to BusinessWorld showed.

The result brought the president’s annual average to a "very good" +53, identical to his 2011 score and nine points below 2010’s +62 (also "very good") -- the highest so far in his three years in office.

Leading Filipino broadcast company GMA Network Inc. (GMA) on Tuesday said it registered strong financials for the first semester of 2012 on improved advertiser confidence and sound financial management.

As of end-June, the company’s consolidated gross revenues reached P6.790 billion, even surpassing last year’s already-solid top line performance by P64 million or 1 percent.
 

AYALA LAND WINS BID FOR FTI FOR P24.33 BILLION!

MANILA, Philippines - Ayala Land Inc. was named the winning bidder for the 74-hectare Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) property in Taguig City, the Privatization and Management Office (PMO) announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Ayala Land bid P24.33 billion for the FTI property, more than double the bids of two other property developers.

Gokongwei-led Robinsons Land made a P14.67 billion bid, while Andrew Tan's Empire East bid P11.2 billion.

ABS-CBN reported Thursday that it paid chief executive and child of owner Eugenio "Gabby" Lopez III and its four highest officers nearly P233.4 million last year, which works out to an average of P46.6 million each.

SALO, Finland — Nokia workers in Salo thought chief executive Stephen Elop signaled that their plant, Europe’s last major mobile phone factory, would survive when he visited in February, but last week he announced its closure anyway.

This final chapter in Nokia’s long goodbye to manufacturing in Finland will claim about 850 jobs, on top of 1,000 announced earlier in the year, and rob the town of 90 percent of its tax revenue.

ABS-CBN EXPECTS FLAT EARNINGS IN THE FIRST HALF OF 2012!

ABS-CBN expects its first-half profit growth to be flat, but is still on track to meet its full-year net income target.

"It's close to flat. But we are sticking to our minimum target of P1.3 billion. We are on track for P1.3 billion," ABS-CBN chief financial officer Ronaldo Valdueza said.

Lopez said the second half is going to be "significantly better" than the first half, as the network continues to improve programming.

A dedicated environmentalist and scion of the politically influential Lopez family is under fire for her alleged plans to put up a tourism resort in the middle of sacred tribal ground in Palawan province.

Bert Palaan, a leader of  Brooke’s Point Federation of Tribal Councils (BPFTC), has accused Gina Lopez and her environment protection arm, ABS-CBN Foundation’s Bantay Kalikasan, of allegedly failing to practice what she was preaching when her construction crew forcibly took over their ancestral land at Sabsaban Falls, Barangay (village) Aribungos, in Brooke’s Point on March 25,  reportedly with the aid of local police and military operatives.

GMA NETWORK EXPANDS REGIONAL REACH TO BEAT ABS-CBN! OPENS ILOCOS STATION!

More than just the competition in Mega Manila, GMA Network is expanding its reach throughout the region to square off its share in ratings.

The network added another station to its growing regional roster. GMA Ilocos was launched June 8 and will go on air starting June 18. The newest local station in the north is located in San Vicente, Ilocos Sur and will have as its first offering the local newscast “Balitang Ilokano.” Soon, the Kapuso Network will also be launching GMA Bicol, which will have “Balitang Bikolano.” Both programs speak their native dialect.Rikki O. Escudero, Vice President for Regional TV, knows for a fact that their closest competitor (ABS-CBN) has long been established in the north. “Medyo apprehensive kami because we know mataas ang standards nila (Ilokanos) eh, and I’m sure they really expect a lot from the local newscast,” she admitted.
