The next flagship devices from Samsung and Apple Inc. may feel sexier as they will use new materials: ceramics for Samsung's Galaxy, and a new alloy "liquid metal" for Apple's iPhone, according to a report on Korea-based tech site ETNews.com which cited industry sources.
It said the materials will make the two firms' devices thin, light and resistant to impact and added that Samsung's Galaxy S3, to be unveiled in London on May 3, is likely to have a ceramic main body.
It said the materials will make the two firms' devices thin, light and resistant to impact and added that Samsung's Galaxy S3, to be unveiled in London on May 3, is likely to have a ceramic main body.
"The material is made by applying heat to a non-metallic inorganic substance. High-tech ceramic using silicon nitride is extremely light and comfortable to grip," the report said.
ETNews.com said the iPhone5 may use liquid metal, an alloy that may include zirconium, titanium, nickel, and copper.
"The new iPhone is expected to make its debut at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco in June," it said.
A separate article on tech site PatentlyApple.com noted that Apple had filed patents related to its agreement with Liquidmetal Technologies.
"While Apple's iPhone 4's glass design definitely had its share of critics and PR problems with antennagate, it still remains the number one smartphone on the market. Yet without a doubt a fresh new design using liquid metal will help to reignite the iPhone's hysteria around the globe," PatentlyApple.com said. — ELR, GMA News
