ABS-CBN weekday primetime shows gained a huge rise in their ratings for the period of January 27 to 31, 2014.
This is according to data of AGB Nielsen Philippines from Mega Manila households.
The biggest winner is the Kapamilya channel's primetime newscast TV Patrol, which got 27.4% ratings on January 27, a Monday. Its previous rating on January 20, Monday, is only 19.6%.
The high ratings continue up to the end of the week. In fact, TV Patrol’s average rating for five days (January 27 to 31, Monday to Friday) was 25.58%. It was only 20.06% on the previous week.
It is also during this period when TV Patrol beat 24 Oras for the first time since 2014 started.
The reason for this rise is TV Patrol's extended coverage of the mauling incident suffered by Kapamilya actor Vhong Navarro. The primetime newscast reportedly devoted more than 20 minutes of its January 27 episode to the story, poring into its latest developments and pushing these information to the top of the headlines.
TV Patrol's ratings boost benefited ABS-CBN's other primetime shows. Compare Honesto's ratings for January 20 (24.4%) and January 27 (26.9%), or Got to Believe's ratings for January 20 (23.6%) and January 27 (28%).
The ratings rise may also have negatively affected the debut of GMA-7's new primetime shows Carmela and Rhodora X, which both debuted on January 27.
Carmela, which stars Marian Rivera and Alden Richards, posted 18.1% on its pilot episode, against Got to Believe's 28%.
Rhodora X, which stars Jennylyn Mercado, registered 15.8% against ABS-CBN's The Legal Wife, which got 23.9%.
The Legal Wife, which stars Angel Locsin, also debuted on January 27. It replaced Maria Mercedes, which ended on January 24 at a high 22.2%. The Jessy Mendiola-starrer regularly made it to the top five most-watched shows every weekday primetime.
On that day, The Legal Wife emerged as top fourth most-watched program while Carmela landed at seventh place. Rhodora X settled at the No. 8 slot.
Another show that ended on January 24 is GMA-7's Prinsesa ng Buhay Ko, which beat Annaliza's 13.4% with its 14.9% rating. There was no clear dominant show between Prinsesa ng Buhay Ko and Annaliza, as both beat each other's scores from time to time.
Paraiso Ko'y Ikaw replaced Prinsesa ng Buhay Ko on January 27 with 11.5%, losing against Annaliza's 15.4%. Paraiso Ko'y Ikaw was not able to beat Annaliza even until January 31.
A significant development during the weekend is Startalk's first Sunday episode on January 26. It's 7.5% rating is very much lower than Buzz ng Bayan's 19.7%. On this day, Vhong’s interview with Boy Abunda was aired on the Kapamilya talk show.
