The next generation of Apple Inc.'s iconic iPad tablet computer may come in March 2012, but will not likely be called the iPad 3.
Instead, Taiwanese tech site DigiTimes said its sources from the upstream supply chain said the new-generation iPad will be an "upgraded" iPad 2."Sources revealed that internally Apple does not view the new iPad product as iPad 3, but rather an upgraded iPad 2 and the real iPad 3 will not be launched until the third quarter of 2012 at the earliest," it reported.

DigiTimes said the upgraded iPad 2 will be thinner than the original iPad 2, and will offer longer battery life.
Also, it said Apple has decided to start small volume shipments in the fourth quarter of 2011 due to the Lunar New Year holidays in China in January.
It noted some channel retailers pointed out the iPad 2 is still the most popular tablet PC product in the IT market currently and Apple has no need to rush to launch a new model.
Meanwhile, a separate article on The Next Web suggested it is doubtful Apple would really release an updated iPad 2 and new iPad 3 within months of each other.
"It seems unlikely that both rumours are correct given Apple’s track record of introducing new products although Digitimes is known to be a reliable source," it said.
It added new devices could include HD screens after Apple was reported to be testing the technology from both Samsung and LG with a view to including it in future iPad releases.
The Next Web also cited reports in August suggesting that Apple was testing its prototype iPad 3 in October but no leaks and more details were forthcoming of the rumored device last month.
